There are several skills a pitcher must acquire in order to be a reliable starter on his team. On the other hand, a pitcher develops much of his skill set off the field. They utilize functional fitness to their full advantage doing pitching specific exercises as opposed to just trying to build bulk and size. Winning pitchers are those that understand and apply the mental game and want to stay in the game until the last out is made. They also never forget the importance of what goes in their bodies. This means that they are not only fit to pitch, but their nutrition is optimal.
Of course there are many more qualities pitchers have other than the ones I mentioned. One that never surprises anyone is that the best players of the game have a tremendous knowledge of pitching. They not only study proper mechanics and all about pitching. They make studying baseball a lifelong pursuit and have a tremendous passion for the game.
Understanding what happens on the field, what about off the field? We know that pitchers are leaders and know that a lot of weight is on their shoulders to pitch well week in and week out. This is an exciting challenge for winning pitchers because they actually want the ball and often request it in a sticky situation. Great pitchers have a good head on their shoulders and are well respected because they respect others. They have learned and will continue to learn life lessons as they pursue to become better people to their fans and friends.
